In 2012 Dubai International Airport inaugurated a massive new building, Concourse 3, boosting its capacity to 75 million passengers per year. The new building caters solely for Emirates Airline Airbus A380 flights, and spreads over 500,000 m² and 11 levels, with entire floors dedicated to business and first class passengers.
It was a priority to ensure that in case of fire Concourse 3 could offer the means to speedily evacuate large numbers of people, most of whom will be unfamiliar with the layout. Colt supplied and installed a smoke containment system to create compartments in the building’s large open spaces and prevent the movement of smoke and heat. The system consists of automatic smoke curtains with a combined length of 1500m spread around various levels of the building. The curtains blend into the building’s design, remaining invisible when not in use, and unroll automatically when needed.
